Holiday Haze

Holiday Haze

Seriously, what day is it?

Oh, that’s right. Thursday. Because I left some vacation days until the end of the year, and now I’m off for four days. What a blessing and a curse all mixed together as one.

I have not slept right in three days so when I woke up at 6:18am I was so relieved it wasn’t 4am again. I also fell asleep on the couch at 7:30pm last night so I think I’ve finally caught up.

Work doesn’t stress me out like that sleep schedule seems, it just keeps my brain working even when I don’t want it to. Here’s looking at you, Hank’s Cheesecake dream at 3:30am.

Anyway, on to fun things like zoo lights and brunch with friends!

Last week I was off on Wednesday so I got up, grabbed my books and started to look at Christmas cookie baking.

I picked out way too many cookies so now I’m going to have to go through and decide what’s important to make. Like Russian Tea balls (or some people call them Mexican Wedding cookies), I’m not spending one Christmas without them!

After I had my list I decided it would be wise to start on my nephew’s quilt for Christmas. Ke$ha of course had to help…enter eye roll emoji here… When you are trying to line up fabric with batting and then more fabric and she’s sliding across the floor into it. It’s cute, don’t get me wrong, but then you remember what you are trying to accomplish. She was happy though so I couldn’t be mad.

On Saturday I was cold at work and we needed coffee so I went next door and got myself a tall Skinny Peppermint Mocha and sat outside to enjoy some quiet.

I was so excited to get off work because we were headed to Wild Lights at the Zoo that night.

We got to the zoo right before it opened at 5:30pm and almost immediately got to start walking through. It was cold but not too cold which made for a good Christmas light viewing.

These were prairie dogs, they moved and everything. We came across this pretty swan next.

image

We went to see the sea lions next which made for a little big of a traumatic experience. The sea lion was bottling like they apparently do when they sleep and then out of no where he sank to the bottom, belly up and just stayed there. And stayed there, and stayed there. We were worried something was wrong with him, but come to find out, that’s how they sleep.

This part had monkeys swinging around. We walked by the sting rays, which they had fake snow going. Jeremy didn’t want to get it on us but then when we looked closer it was tiny bubbles bunched up. It was like magic!

We went to see the penguins because that’s one of of favorites. They were sleeping and one was sleep walking and almost falling over himself. So cute. Then we went to see my other favorite, Kali the polar bear. He was sleeping. This huge, probably scary in real life, bear. Sleeping like my pup does with his head on his paws. So impressive. Oh, and they had lights of them outside his exhibit.

I had tried with no luck to take a picture of Jeremy and I outside of the penguins so I gave up and asked him to take a picture with his phone. We came by these really cute gingerbread people right outside of where the carousel is.

And I finally got my picture.

We got to walk along the gingerbread gumdrops.

Then I finally managed a good picture with my camera of the two of us.

Can you tell we were getting cold? We stopped at a little shop to grab a hot chocolate to share and ducked into the Insectarium because it was free that night. Creepy cool things are in that building. When we were warm enough we decided to head back to the entrance, look at the lights we missed and head to dinner.

We went to a newer Mexican restaurant near our house. We started with cheese dip and margaritas.

For dinner I ordered a quesadilla with mushrooms and cheese. It was really good and I got my favorite, the beans and rice!

We headed home and got into bed because we had a breakfast date with a friend we hadn’t seen in a while.

We arrived at her house at 9am and we started the coffee flowing. She makes the best food. She was making crepes when we arrived but we started with salami and cheese on Miller’s 5 Grain Companion bread. Hello delicious!

Zina always reminds me to eat mindfully when we are with her. Not like she says “Jessica, slow down” haha but I’ve spent so much time in retail scarfing down food just so that I can fit it in and eat but when we are with her we sit, talk, sip coffee, take little bites. I am always happy after these kinds of meals.

We took a break for a bit, and then she starting melting chocolate over the stove. We asked her what it was for, and boy were we in for a treat. Remember the crepes I mentioned earlier? She made walnut and chocolate crepes.

Spoiled, that what we are.

At around 1pm we decided we needed to head out and get some of our things on our list completed. We headed to the puppy store to get a couple things for Ke$ha for Christmas. I didn’t even wrap them. They are in her stocking and let me tell you how much she is interested in that thing now.

She has a new dino and an antler. The cookie she has been chipping away at since Monday. She loves her cookies.

Now, we have a huge weekend ahead of us. Today we are finishing Christmas shopping, getting Jeremy a hair cut and working on cookie shopping. Tomorrow I will be mixing cookie dough and putting it in the refrigerator. I was invited to a cookie exchange on Saturday and then I invited my mom and brothers over for Christmas dinner so I know that we get some time together with us all working in retail. Sunday will be for cleaning up the weekend and resetting for the busy week ahead. Christmas being on a weekend is an odd thing.
